I'll start the ball rolling with two quotations.

First, this is what I consider to be the wisest possible view:
"We learn through experience and experiencing, and no one teaches anyone anything. This is as true for the infant moving from kicking and crawling to walking as it is for the scientist with his equations.
If the environment permits it, anyone can learn whatever he chooses to learn; and if the individual permits it, the environment will teach him everything it has to teach."
~Viola Spolin (1999). Improvisation for the Theater Third Edition. {re-found on Wikipedia]

And then, a little more cautionary:
"I have tried to keep in mind that anecdotes can easily become interpretations, and that facts expand in minds when they are not opposed by knowledge."
~Bernd Heinrich (1999). The Mind of the Raven.

"One can never consent to creep when one feels the compulsion to soar."
~Helen Killer (1896).

'Man's mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.'
~Oliver Wendell Holmes Jnr

'The world by and large has to be reinvented.'
~Charles Handy in 'Beyond Certainty'.

Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere.
~Chinese Proverb

By learning you will teach, by teaching you will learn.
~Latin Proverb

Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twent or eighty.
~Henry Ford

The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.
~Alvin Toffler

"The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as that every child should be given the wish to learn.”
~John Lubbock

A teacher who is attempting to teach without inspiring the pupil with a desire to learn is hammering on cold iron.
~Horace Mann

Teaching should be full of ideas instead of stuffed with facts.
~Author Unknown
Here comes my favourites...
'We must give more attention to the interplay between the science of teaching - pedagogy - and the art of teaching... A teacher must be anchored in pedagogy and blend imagination, creativity and inspiration into the teaching learning process to ignite a passion for learning in student.' Peyton Williams, President ASCD 2003

|||| "You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives." ||
|| Clay P. Bedford ||

Two new words: Unlearn and Relearn

The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn. ~Alvin Toffler

A teacher is someone who never says anything once.
~Howard Nemerov

This is one of my favourite bits of wisdom, when it comes to language learning. That is why I prefer a lot of input before trying to learn any grammar. But it does not only apply to language learning. I am visiting Italy, Lucca to be exact. I was given a map of the city. It was basically useless to me. Now after a day of wandering around this old city, exploring fascinating old streets and noticing cathedrals, piazzas and towers, the map is a lot clearer and more useful. Once you have been around a new language for a while, listening to people converse, or reading articles and stories of interest, noticing words and phrases, the grammar explanations start to make sense, not before, at least for me. external image pixel.png?p=mozilla&v=2.0.3&t=1288039415254&u=2680441&e=5215
